CITY OF LONDON borough profile
The heart of the capital and one of the biggest financial centres in the
world, the city of London may not spring to mind first when in search of
a London home. The city is still primarily commercial, stocked with tall
glass fronted buildings from every side and shops and bars that bustle with
the nine-to-five yet lie deserted at the weekend. In reality the city has
undergone a renaissance in its role as a residential borough over the past
decade. Office blocks and warehouses have been converted into smart new
apartments as developers respond to government pressure to build on previously
used inner city sites. Popular with busy city workers eager to avoid the
hassle of a long commute, the city's role as a home seems assured for the
future.

Notable areas in more detail...
Barbican Property Guide
Never judge a book by its cover! The Barbican's austere grey appearance
hides a very popular and sought after development. Built in the 1970's
and originally intended as council flats, the inner complex houses an
arts centre along with the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the
City of London Girls School. The grey concrete maze houses mainly one
and two bedroom apartments, many with balconies overlooking the central
gardens and fountains. Penthouses offer true luxury yet are few and far
between. South and west facing flats command a higher premium, whilst
service charges all round are steep.
Who lives here? City workers, investors. 10% of residents are still council
tenants.

replaced with more eye-pleasing structures.
